10 Clues You Are Living in 2012

How do you know you're living in the year 2012?

This is how:

* Pinterest has sucked you in and it's not letting go...thank goodness.

* You're a Droid user and you are finally allowed to play with the cool kids on Instagram.

* Though 365 projects have been around for awhile, finally playing with said cool kids and their snazzy app has you jumping in on the whole photo-a-day thing.

* You open an honest to goodness print book and think Wow, the typeface sure is small... And you're truly not sure if your thinking has skewed you that way because of the number of ebooks you've read this year where you've had the luxury of increasing the font or because you're simply getting older.

It's the ebooks, definitely the ebooks.  No, really it must be those ebooks.

* With the premiere of Breaking Dawn Part Two in November, the Twilight Craze will be coming to an end.

* You have Carly Rae Jepson's Call Me Maybe, Gotye's Somebody that I Used to Know, Kelly Clarkson's Stronger, Maroon Five's Moves Like Jagger or Payphone, Pink's Blow Me One Last Kiss or dozens of others stuck on an endless loop in your head.

* There's some girl named Snooki pregnant and having a baby (or just had a baby) and it breaks into mainstream media...as news.

* You turn on the tv, see a ton of trash talk and when you look at the guide you realize you're not watching reality tv...oh wait, it is reality...it's an election year.

* When commercials for major brands include social media jokes as the vehicle to demonstrate the lifestyle you would have if you bought the car they're selling.

* When instead of consulting your refrigerator for what's for dinner, you post on Facebook, tweet on Twitter, search your food board's pins on Pinterest.

* When you talk about taking yourself, a human being, offline for a day or a weekend and not simply a product, a guitar's amp, a hairdryer, a computer.

Okay, apparently, I got into identifying with this 2012 year since I've got eleven on my list.  Don't tell on me, 'kay? ;>

What about you?  What screams 2012 for you?

Back to School 2012

One of our Back to School shots always includes the backpacks.

Today is the First Day of School for us.  I've got one kidlet so excited she's bouncing out of her skin (though, she's almost always bouncing, so...) and the other has decided it's going to be a good year (I'll take that!).

Watching her excitement build and his thought process, while he decided if it is indeed going to be a good year got me looking forward to the school year starting up again too.  Here's eight reasons why:

1) Watching them achieve their goals; seeing them so excited as they reach each new milestone; watching their eyes light up when they 'get' something for the first time.

2) Welcoming back Mondays.  For years I thought Mondays were the day to dread, now I look forward to them.  Believe it or not, Mondays are my most productive day.

3) Simple things.  Using a restroom without somebody asking me to referee, solve a problem, or if they can watch Looney Tunes.

4) Being able to play my music uncensored and not worrying if the explicit version of a favorite song is the next one cued up.

5) Kicking this beyond annoying writing block I've been tripping over to the curb.

6) Coffee with a friend.  Yes.

7) Volunteering in the classroom and seeing the kids grow as a whole.

8) The first day of school is the grand kickoff to the fall and holiday season and my favorite time of year, autumn. (Semantics technicality note: I realize fall and autumn encompass the same time span. However, for me, fall is the season linked to the dates on the calendar; while autumn is tied to leaves changing colors, pumpkins, turkeys, and crisp air breathed in while the sun shines through a clear blue sky.)

And what's the one thing I'm not looking forward to the most?

The 5:40 am alarm clock.  I have to set two, just to make sure I'm up in time.  And even then, it's sometimes a gamble!

From The Good Life, a la The Actor's Studio

Stasha, at The Good Life, has a great list of ten inspired by Bridget, inspired by James Lipton from Inside The Actor's Studio, inspired by the Proust Questionnaire.  And since I somehow, quite mysteriously and rather accidentally, took a week off from blogging, dipping my toes back in via a list makes the water, as it usually is, mighty fine.

1. What is your favorite word?
You might think the words 'actually' and 'just' are favorites, since I actually use them just far too often.  But, they're not.  I am rather fond of supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, though.

2. What is your least favorite word?
Hate.

3. What turns you on?
Contagious laughter, creative thinking, creativity manifested.

4. What turns you off?
Intentional rudeness.

5. What sound do you love?
Water rushing, lapping, trickling.  In the ocean, on a lake's shore.  Through a stream.

6. What sound do you hate?
Extreme whining.  Car alarms.

7. What is your favorite curse word?
Frak and all derivative states of it.  Yes, I'm a scifi geek.

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
Pilot.

9. What profession would you not like to do?
Plumber.  Spelunker.  Deep sea diver.  Can you see the theme here?

10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
Welcome.

And yes, I just now realized that today is Tuesday, not Monday.  Rather silly, considering I spent all day yesterday at my daughter's school - which is obviously not open & active on a Sunday.  Going to go pour myself some java now and hit my reset button.

Oh Internet...

After spending most of yesterday without a splash of the Net to play around in, I realized just how much my love affair with the interwebs has grown over the last few years.

Oh, Internet.  How I love you...let me count the ways:

1)  A sudden unfulfilled urge to blog slips by without you, Internet.

2)  Without you at my fingertips, I'm forced to download, install, and figure out apps on my phone - fun, but I prefer you in full interactive form with all your bells and whistles.

3)  Without you, I'm almost driven to the brink of madness as I try to cope with Auto-fill on my phone....who, quite clearly, has a very different vocabulary.

4)  You bring me music to groove/sing/write to, Firefly, Dancing With the Stars, beautifully blogged posts to read, gorgeous bits to look upon - a la Pinterest, sunshine, rainbows, glitter, oh my!

5)  You have Facebook, Twitter, iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, NaNoWriMo, Amazon, Etsy, Write on Edge (my son is the one who pointed 'that writing prompt thing' out! :>), Flickr, and more email accounts than I care to count.

6)  You have the essential parenting resource:  Google.

7)  And most important, Internet, you have my friends tucked in, around, and about your interwebs.

While I may turn you off at times, please don't ever leave my demanding fingertips again.

Thank you, ever so much!

Fantasy Land

I let my mind wander a bit into Fantasy Land here and some of the things that could possibly change in that magical land.

~ A snooze button for time itself:  to get in more sleep, more playtime, more time to soak up kidlet cuteness, to make a beautiful day last longer.

~ An unlimited travel budget, not because I have a long list of exotic locales on my list that I want to travel to (I leave that to my brother), rather so that I can visit my peeps easily, to return with my husband to Vancouver, take him to New Orleans, and stay at the coast often.

~ And the power of Mary Poppins, to sing a song and have everything magically find it's proper home lickety split!

~ Rainbows coloring the sky at least once a week.

~ Ooo...speaking of the skies, personal weather dials would be pretty nifty.  Some could keep summer around all year.  Me?  I'd opt for crisp, sunny, Autumn!

~ And up in those gorgeous, crisp, sunny Autumn skies, how about some superpowers in this magical Fantasy Land o' changes?  Flying, soaring through those skies would be darn smile worthy.

~ Since we're talking superpowers here, how about magically knowing winning lottery numbers?!  I guess that would take care of the unlimited travel budget. ;>

~ Oh wait!  I've got it!  Skip that unlimited travel budget and the winning lottery numbers, if I could teleport myself anywhere, none of that would be necessary!

I think I'll end there before I escape into Fantasy Land any longer.  I don't have a way to stop time and despite my never ending search for her, I still don't know how to track down Mary Poppins to sing my house into order.

So, I'm off to clean for company later this week and take care of my wee girl, who's home sick from school.  It's an uber exciting day here, I know!

But, that's okay.  This week is bracketed by a crazy wonderful weekend and another fun one coming up!

Walk on the Wild Side

"You're wiiiiiiiiiiillllllllllllllllllddddddddddddd!" she calls out, throwing her head back, her eyes smiling even brighter than the one on her face.

Oh wait. Whoops falling into an '80s movie memory. It's such an easy slope to slip 'n slide. Wild animals. That's why we're here.

@NorthWestMommy from The Good Life has us listing up all things wild and animal like.  And I'm listing along!

Sometimes the animal just needs a tasty treat.

Sometimes they just need a cuddle.

Sometimes it's about location, location, location.

Sometimes you give a hand some paint & the wild develops on the page.

Sometimes the wild animal and the wild child meet, greet, and merge.

Sometimes that wild owl turns on the charm and tops the cake.

Sometimes even owls fall from grace, get all angry bird, and meet the snack platter, looking all tasty.

Sometimes the wild migrates to the classroom and lands its victims in detention.  Don't you forget about me, don't don't don't don't.... Whoops, on that '80s movie slip 'n slide again!  I've got it under control now, I swear.

Sometimes the wild world reminds us it's all about the love.

Sometimes the animal world, wild or domesticated, reminds us it really is okay to trust.

Sometimes a walk on the wild side can bring you right back home.

It's Labor Day here in the States and all of us are home today, from school, from work, from shuttling kidlets back and forth.

We began our day with some cuddles and a whole lotta giggles.  Hubs whipped up breakfast for all of us and we've enjoyed a nice leisurely morning.  It's been a fantastic three day weekend here.  What have you been up to?

10 Places I Love To Be

Lists! I used to be a huge list girl growing up, but in the last half a dozen years, I seem to have given them up (sort of, but that's a whole other post!).  But what a rockin' awesome way to give list making a recharge...by linking up with Stasha, from The Good Life, along with many peeps who's blogs are fun to visit!

10 Places I Love

1)  Vancouver, British Columbia
One of the locales the husband & I honeymooned at. And after gallery hopping, we selected our wedding present to each other, a piece of original art.

2)  Victoria, British Columbia
Yup, another stop on our honeymoon.  Victoria is simply magical and we both want to revisit these beautiful cities again.

3)  Home
My family, our very loud kitty, hugs, smiles, laughter, and of course, creature comforts can all be found under this roof.

4)  Pacific Ocean
I love an escape to the ocean, specifically any beaches from Northern California and up.  I love the rugged beauty of our coast and visits to it are exquisitely peaceful and relaxing.

5)  Fort Bragg & Mendocino
Same as #4, but getting even more specific.  It's here that we love to travel to for our anniversaries.

6)  Here, Time Crafted & online!
Simply put, this is where I get to connect with so many awesome peeps, like you! :>

7)  Bookstores
Have to admit, I was quite bummed when Borders began closing their doors.  There's still Barnes & Noble and a local chain of book stores to fill the need.  Yes, need.  Not only do I love getting lost in a story, but I love books themselves.  I love the paper, the binding, the dust jackets, the typeface.  All of it makes me smile.  (All of it, except figuring out where else to put them in my house...I ran out of room a Long time ago!)

8)  The countryside surrounding my town.
I love a country drive.  My kidlets love country drives.  We love riding in silence.  We love chatting along our drive.  We love cranking up a favorite CD, as the ground passes beneath our tires.  And I love, love, love hearing my kidlets remark on how lucky we are to live somewhere so beautiful.

9)  Anywhere with my Four Musketeers.
Best friends.  Sisters.  Trips to Disneyland without little ones.  'Nuff said.

10)  In a Hug.
I'm a hugger. With Hubs, with my kidlets, with my friends.  (Don't worry, if you're not a hugger, I totally get that too! :>)

Now, that felt good to be reminded of and revisit so many places my heart loves to be.  Totally smile worthy!  Where do love to be?

I love books! I don't hesitate to buy new ones, they are better than a manicure, a massage, or a couple of javas.  And while all other links in this post are to others' blogs or my own, the bookstore link is an affiliate link.

Friday Evening Fun {at home}

List the menu for your last meal.

Well, I wouldn't necessarily call what we eat on Friday night a meal, but it's dinner!

Friday nights are movie nights for the kidlets.  So, I made them their GFCF pizza (with the appropriate mozzarella Daiya 'cheese' shreds this time) and while Finding Nemo graced our screen, Hubby threw some toppings on a cheese pizza that he picked up at Safeway on his way home.

And I hopped on to Twitter to go where all fun people go on a Friday night, #wineparty! (And no, wine is not required. I don't generally drink it, despite living surrounded by vineyards!)  It's a fabulously fun place to hang on a Friday night when you're home and feel like chatting.

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Pizza's done.  I pardoned myself from #wineparty for a few minutes to eat with the family (I *might* have snuck a few tweets in there! Shhh....) and watch a little Finding Nemo (love the jelly fish & sea turtles...Dude!).

Hubby had thrown red onion, bacon, red bell pepper, olives, and chopped artichoke hearts on top of the plain cheese pizza.  (Everything goes better with bacon, artichoke hearts & red onion, don't ya know?! :>)

And yes, after dinner, I went back to #wineparty.  But, my computer is in the living room, mere feet from the kidlets.  When they select a new movie to watch, I'll watch with them, but when they've watched the same movie three weeks in a row, like they did with the uber cute How to Train Your Dragon, a gal's gotta have somewhere to turn!

What does a Friday night look like for you?

Writing along with my friend, Lizz of Am I a Funny Girl? for Saturday Seven again this week!  Stop by and say hello!  :>

Disclosure:  I might break a few "rules" in life, but I follow the FTC's! The movie links are affiliate links.

I'll Bet You're on My List!

List mentors, dead or alive, you wish you could have access to.

Hmmmm...not sure I've used the word "mentors" before.  Most people who know me, know that I'm a pretty independent gal who does and thinks her own thing.

However, with that said, there have been many people, dead and alive, from the past and present who have shaped me, guided me, led me when I needed to be led, followed me when I needed to be followed, and overall, made me a better person.  I'm grateful for them all!  (And as I wrote this, I realized there are a few overlaps from my first Saturday Seven post, so I've intentionally left the obvious Family off this list to help with that!)

Listed in no particular order:

* From the 'Dead, but Oh So Impactful' List:  Susan B. Anthony

* From my teen years and into adulthoodThe Four Musketeers

* Speaking of those teen years, my time with my #667 Girl Scout troop, where I met so many wonderful girls, now women, made lasting friendships, and continue to have contact with so many today.

* Having gone to three elementary schools, two junior highs, and one high school in three states, on two coasts, I've had quite a few wonderful teachers that shaped me, inspired me, and not only taught me reading, writing, and arithmetic, but about who I am and who I can be.

* And from the 'Oh What a Wondrous Surprise' List:  YOU! All of You who stop in and visit with me, all of You who take time from Your day to leave comments, all of You who are blogging Your hearts out, all of You who are sharing Your stories, all of You who ooze with so much creativity that we are fortunate you've elected to spill just some of it onto and into your blogs and websites, all of You who are humorous and snarky and laugh-out-loud worthy, all of You who inspire me have made my world a better place, made me want to stretch my creativity from paper and ink to paint and canvas to camera lens and click to words and wit and I THANK YOU for All of it!! :>

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Writing along with Lizz of Am I a Funny Girl? for this Saturday Seven (albeit late into the day....it's been dark and rainy and a very pleasant cozy day with my family and yes, I'm indulging in all of it and running late! :>).

And once again, I'm such a rule breaker (LOL!) and have listed five...er, um...well, if you really added up all the people within those five bullets, there are hundreds (wait...that means I'm still breaking the Seven rule)!  Okay, so nobody said math was a strict requirement of blogging and writing, right?! ;>

Who has shaped you into who you are today?

The Random Approach to Memory Lane ~ Saturday Seven

List the foods that are always left in the fridge when everything else has been eaten.

I'm writing along with friend Lizz of Am I a Funny Girl? again this Saturday and she's pulling prompts from a book of lists randomly.  And yes, this certainly looks random!

Though, random can get a gal thinking.  I don't think our fridge is ever really empty.  We might be out of essentials or items that will bring complete dishes together, but definitely not empty.  So, for once, I thought I would follow Lizz's rules and list seven guests our fridge always has:

1) Mustard!  Lots and lots of mustard.

You know what I think is really funny?  Growing up, I couldn't stand mustard!!  I used to tell people that even eating a mere speck of mustard would give a person a fatal disease called, "Mustardania" (I used immense creativity in naming that, don't ya know! ;>) and so I just couldn't eat it.....I didn't want to die of such a horrible disease!  And now?  I {heart} mustard!  Yes, I know, I'm easily amused, but it does make me laugh.

2)  Sauerkraut.  I wasn't too fond of this either growing up, but now pork chops are just not the same without it.  My boy wants sauerkraut on almost any sandwich that's made with almost any kind of left over meat these days.  Ask him what he wants on his sandwich and the answer is almost always, "{Insert whatever kind of meat or hot dog here}, mustard, sauerkraut, and lettuce" and sometimes he adds ketchup and slices of tomato to that list.  And after his first bite, he tells his Dad (maker of said sandwiches), "That sandwich is DA BOMB!"  Cracks me up!

3)  Pickles.  Now, I love a good dill pickle.  But, my kidlets are pickle junkies, I kid you not!  Until we started removing things from our boy's diet  (gluten, casein, soy, and as many preservatives and dyes as we can), I had no idea how much *junk* is in pickles!  Go into your standard, run of the mill grocery store and look at the five shelves stocked full of a zillion different kind of pickles and read the labels.  They are mostly filled with ingredients that I cannot pronounce, aka preservatives, and dyes.  It absolutely amazed me!

4)  Horseradish.  Fresh, grated, and/or creamed.  I'm not a fan of uber spicy foods from either peppercorns or chili peppers, but I do love some horseradish kick!  Try adding some to your next meatloaf.  Horseradish looses its pungency when heated, so it's not spicy at all, but definitely flavorful.  I also love to add it to mayonnaise and/or mustard when making a sandwich.

5)  Milk alternatives.  Our boy likes rice milk, and that's what he usually drinks, but I'm not so much a fan of the stuff.  I keep coconut milk and the delish almond milk for smoothies and some baking.  Almond milk is offered in several varieties and our favorite is the unsweetened vanilla.  If you haven't tried it yet, you're missing out!

6)  Lemon juice.  I almost always have lemons on hand, but I keep some lemon juice as well for when I run out of the fruit itself.

7)  Cheese.  I know.  Cheese?  After the casein free milk alternatives?  What I lump into the cheese category, also includes his cheese alternatives!  And while we often run out of one kind or another, there usually is some kind of cheese in there.

They (you know, those "they"s out there) always say we have strong memories tied to food.  But, never would I have thought that the prompt, "List the foods that are always left in the fridge when everything else has been eaten." would take me down memory lane.  Yet, it did just that.  And I'm glad I followed!

What food memories do you have?  What foods did you grow up not liking that are a staple for you now?

I'm still smiling thinking about my son's "DA BOMB" sandwich and since we're approaching the lunch hour here, I think I'll go make him one now.  Hope your weekend is a great one!

{Wish} - Saturday Seven

List what you wish for whenever you see a shooting star, blow out birthday candles or drop a coin in a fountain.

Okay, so I {heart} this list prompt, but its actually a hard one for me!  I'm going to backtrack a bit as I know there are many who do no such wishing.  Are you a wisher?  I am!

I'm a wisher, a lover of daydreams, a writer of wish lists (not talking material wish lists here) and yet, I cannot write a list of things I wish for when the opportunities arise.

But, when a wish making moment presents itself, I'm there!

1) Birthday candles (which I did a couple days ago!), for sure.

2) In high school, we were all obsessed with necklace clasps that had fallen to the front being turned to the back and if your hands were on the necklace (regardless of who's necklace it was), you got in on the chance to make a wish.

3) Skipping down memory lane now....another high school (or Junior High?) wishing tradtion that I hopped on was when a digital clock read with all the same numbers across (aka 2:22, 3:33, 5:55, etc.).  Writing that sounds odd.  Oh well, we were taking every opportunity to get our {Wish} on!

4) When I first moved to this neck of the woods over fifteen years ago, I took drives into the country and was absolutely amazed at how many shooting stars I could see and ate up every single one I glimpsed.  I was wishing away at warp speed!

5) Speaking of stars....I still find myself wish I may(ing), wish I might(ing) on the first star I see at night!

6) Disneyland trips with the Four Musketeers had us dropping a coin into the wishing well. We all leaned in, eyes closed, silent (for once!) and wished, wished, wished.

7) And when I had kidlets, my wishing grew by leaps and bounds, as did my heart.  Suddenly, I was wishing, no longer just for myself, but for my own little family.  Can I just tell you how much fun that is?!

So, I eat up the wish opportunities, but what I wish for changes each and every time!  So, I suppose, I'm being a bit of a rule bender here (gasp!), in listing where those chances for wish making come from for me.  But, I think my old Girl Scout friend, Lizz of Am I a Funny Girl? will understand!  Go see what she wishes for, I know I will! :>

Are you a wisher?  What do you wish for?  When do you find yourself wishing away? Do you have a favorite wish locale or tradition?  I'd love to hear it!

Day after Day

List the things you hear yourself saying, day after day.

There are the usual momisms:
"I love you! Have a great day!"
"Front & Center!"
"Hands off the walls."
"No running in the house!"
"No jumping next to the computer!"
"Use your words."
"Belly button to your plate, please."

"WOW!!!"

"Where are we going? What are we listening to?"
Dialing in our country drive, each day after school.  Lately, their musical selections are alternating between the Inspiration Everywhere CD and Jungle Book 2 soundtrack.

"What, Bonnie?!"
In regards to our cat, who has taken on loud meowing as a full time job.

"Nutterbutters!"
Usually in response to silly kidlet antics.

And when the silly moves to the nonsensical:
"You're hurting my pockets."

"Use your words."

And these two are exchanged with my wee girl and are often said by either one of us:

"You're so sweet, cute and smart!"
And the reply always is, "And. So. Are. You."

"Mother-Daughter team. You. And. Me."

"Use your words."

"That's 'cause you've got The Big Brain."

And the simple phrase that echoes through the hall from all of us, ending the night, each and every night:
"I love you! Night-night!"

I am writing along with Lizz of Am I a Funny Girl? again today.  And while this is technically the "Saturday Seven", I just went with the flow and listed up some of the things that I say on a daily basis from the heart and some that I'm so sick of saying, I'd rather just have them tattooed to my forehead!  I'm sure we all have a few of those! :>

What do you hear yourself saying day after day?

Saturday Seven

Prompt:  List some of the people who have really changed your life.
(Listing in order of entry into my life, rather than importance! :>)

1) 4 Musketeers:  I met Fishey first.  I still remember what she was wearing the day I met her in the fall of the eighth grade: skirt, white polo shirt, white Keds, and on crutches.  Next, I met Woodstock at a local Girl Scout meeting.  I was brand new to a troop that had been together since elementary school days.  And lastly, Snoopy.  Woodstock brought her to a Girl Scout meeting one night and I immediately knew we would be friends.  I put my arm through hers and took her away, introducing her to everyone.

These three women are the sisters I don't have.  They are Aunties to my kidlets.  They are there when I need to vent.  They are there when I am smiling.  We've been friends for over twenty years and I'm so looking forward to the next twenty and more.

2) Mac Truck Driver:  While driving on the freeway one morning, I was in a near fatal accident with an 18 wheeler, two trailer big rig.  I was 21 years old.  I sustained multiple injuries and that accident, all those years ago, has forever changed every part of my life.

Every single aspect of my life has changed.  There are more negatives than I would ever want to document here, but I did gain a few things of a more positive nature from that.  I learned patience, tolerance and acceptance (of pain, limitations, changes), and to always try to find that silver lining.  Sometimes, I'm quite surprised at where the smile worthy part is in a challenge, but its almost always there, if I look hard enough.

I don't ride rainbows, but I do try to see those little things that can make me smile.  And for me, life is so much better that way!

3) Hubs:  I was in my early twenties when we began dating, mid twenties when we married, and now in my mid thirties.  And I have changed so much in that time.  While we've grown together, I have also been free to grow as an individual. Giving me that freedom and support has changed who I am.

4) Kidlets:  Becoming a Mama is a such a major change to both my life and who I am.  They teach me to see life from different perspectives, to see the beauty in the big and small, and as fast as life can move with a couple of energetic kidlets, they also teach me to slow down and see those little moments that often escape our attention.

5) Some new creative friends (you know who you are ;>):  They have changed the way I see myself.  They have given me courage to explore my creativity.  They have changed those limits I set upon myself.  And I'm grateful to them for that.

The list could go on and on, but these ten people (#s 1, 4, 5 are multiple people!) have all changed my life in significant and lasting ways.  Wonder what life has to offer and who I'll meet next?

I'm writing along with Lizz of Am I a Funny Girl? today.  Go see who has changed her life and give her some comment love! :>  If you write along with her, let me know so I can come visit you too!  Happy Saturday! :>
